The Glider and the String

Flying Dalles Mtn. Ranch

I suppose there are times when a glider feels tied down by the string. “If this bothersome string would just let go of me, I could fly really high,” the glider might think. But that isn’t true, is it? Without the string holding it in the face of the wind, the glider would quickly come crashing to the ground. Inviting reality checks is a good thing.

I sent my Team Manager, Mike, an extra Vurtego Pogo Stick and he sent me back this video. I was on the floor laughing so hard I couldn’t breath. It started to get scary. Enjoy!

NEW TRANSITIONS

She was pretty. I was shy. Love is stupid. It hits you like a blunt object and converts the rational mind into emotional mush. And the beautiful part about it is, you don’t even care because it feels so awesome. Thank you GG. I’m crazy about you.

The Good Life

Lawson Hammock

I just ordered another Blue Ridge Camping Hammock from Wes at Lawson Hammock; he’s a cool dude.  This is pretty much where I’ll be living this summer; these hammocks are super comfortable, light, really durable and it’s nice to be off the ground, especially when you’re on uneven terrain.  It comes with a rainfly too; makes an amazing 4-season shelter.  You should seriously get one of these, you won’t regret it, it’ll give you that awesome kid in a treehouse feeling.

Take a Hike

Hike

Went on an awesome 15-mile hike today in the Gorge, trying to get to this cool flying take-off spot I saw on Google Earth.  Got the chance to break in the black & blue waterproof Shellrocks from KEEN, super comfortable and kept my feet dry through the inevitable Oregon winter swamps.  These are by far the highest quality trail shoes I’ve ever had.

Hood River

Also stopped by the Hood River skate park, I’m way bummed they took out the vert ramp.  It was pretty fun to pump around on the board though.  The new undercover section’s alright but it doesn’t make up for them taking the vert ramp out.  Skating felt pretty awkward, I haven’t skated in over a month.  I’m really looking forward to spring and good weather, being able to fly and ride every day and getting back in good shape.

Notice the mountain biker in the background…

BASE Jumping = FUN

 IB Perrine Bridge

“You’re just an adrenaline junkie!  A high risk, gambling lunatic hell-bent on sending yourself to an early grave!  A crackpot with a death wish and little regard for your own life, nor a thought for those you’d leave behind when the inevitable happens!  Why don’t you get involved in a safe sport?  Like skydiving, or fishing, or photography?”

If, like me, you’ve spent your life justifying your eccentric desire to soar like a bird to friends and family who claim they know better and dismiss your life giving passion as just a crazy act of self gratifying egotism, or worse still, some form of death wish, then you’ll be more familiar with the preceeding diatribe.  The smug terra-firmites think they’ve got it right, yet new evidence has recently been unveiled that shows that flying is actually good for you, and the more the better.  So get out there and spread your wings!

First Jump

Over the Snake River

Coming in

I went to Twin Falls, ID this last weekend, home of the only bridge in the U.S. where base jumping is publicly accepted year round.  This was my first bridge jump, it was amazing; I went with the infamous Dork Zone Hero, who runs an awesome Death Camp and is one of the most extreme, coolest, funniest people I know.

Stayed at the HomeBASE hostel, met some really cool people, Serena, Dustin, Andrew, Angela, Jimmy & Marta, and Ted Whiting who took the pics!

WTF

Bloody!

So the other night, the craziest thing happened… I was at a restaurant with my girlfriend and I walked around the corner to go to the restroom as I was pulling my sleeves down.  Next thing I know, I’m taking a little trip and my palm was punctured by the corner of a picture frame!!  Glass everywhere, blood was squirting like a fountain up and on walls 2 feet from me. It was a total bloodbath!  Waitresses were screaming and stuff, I walked back into the bar, grabbed a handful of napkins to stop the squirting, but they soaked through within seconds.  I got blood on the manager, in the hallway, on the bar, on the walls, on some chairs…  The people at the restaurant were panicking, “Call an ambulance, NOW!!”

I was totally fine but it was a ridiculous amount of blood for such a minor injury.  The ambulance came but I was like…I’m just going to have my girlfriend drive me to the hospital and get some stitches.  It took longer for them to arrive than it would have taken to drive the 3 blocks to the hospital!  AND, the people at the hospital didn’t exactly inspire confidence in their ability to do pretty much anything, but it’s nothing new.  Two and a half hours later, no more glass in the hand, lots of shots (even a tetanus with whooping cough, which I guess is making a comeback), x-rays (which don’t show glass anyway), a sore-ass arm and a few stiches… I’m good as new and still pondering the meaning of life.

Their corporate office guy called me today, I think they think I’m about to sue, but that’s just not my style.  Free meals for life might not be a bad deal though! ha ha

Antoine Montant is the Best Speedflyer of The Year 2009!

For the second year in a row, Antoine Montant (France) pockets the highest distinction for a speed flyer. He won it wednesday after the Big Mountain contest of the Speed Flying Pro, the most important speed flying competition which took place in les Arcs. Mickaël Régnier is second and Yoan Castagnoli third.
On the Aiguille Rouge, Antoine Montant displayed his famous combination of daring piloting, strong skiing, surprising choice of line and uncompromising risk taking.

Today in the Big Mountain contest, the speed flyers had to find their way on the mountain being noted by a jury. Antoine Montant’s first place today, combined with his third yesterday in the speed cross, paved the way for a victory… only, and only if his rival Yoan Castagnioli finished third or below. This is exactly what happened.

The young speed flyer threw in a conservative line. Castagnoli wanted, above all, to cross the finish line, and avoid repeating last year scenario where he fell in the first part of the same run. He finished 11th of the Big Mountain and 3rd overall.

The outsider Mickaël Regnier, competing for the first time in the Speed Flying Pro, was the most consistent : 2nd in the speed cross and 5th in the big mountain which landed him 2nd on the overall ranking.
